The resort itself has no railway and the nearest commercial airport is Tbilisi (TBS), two hours by car in good weather. Marshrutkas (shared minivans) run from Didube Bus Station in Tbilisi, but they leave on a fixed schedule and cannot carry ski equipment comfortably. The E117 Georgian Military Highway is one of the most scenic routes in the Caucasus, but it demands attention. From Tbilisi (elevation 450 metres), the road climbs steadily through the Aragvi Valley, passing Mtskheta (20 kilometres, 20 minutes), where you can stop at Jvari Monastery for a panoramic view of the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. Thirty kilometres further north is Ananuri, a medieval fortress and church complex on the shore of the Zhinvali Reservoir - a popular photo stop and the last place with reliable mobile signal before the high mountains. Petrol stations are available in Mtskheta, Ananuri and Pasanauri; fill your tank before climbing above 2,000 metres, as fuel is limited in Gudauri and expensive.
The climb from Ananuri to Gudauri covers 60 kilometres and rises 1,400 metres. The road narrows and becomes winding around the village of Mleta, where you see the start of the alpine zone. In winter, snowploughs clear the main carriageway daily, but side lanes and parking areas may be icy. Drive slowly on descents and use engine braking rather than constant braking pressure. At the Friendship Monument (2,384 metres, 10 kilometres before Gudauri), you can stop for photographs - the circular Soviet-era mosaic pavilion overlooks the valley and is a popular selfie spot. Gudauri itself (2,200 metres) is a modern resort with hotels, restaurants, ski rental shops and a small supermarket; parking is free at most hotels, though spaces fill quickly on weekends in peak season (January to February).
From Gudauri, the highway continues north over the Cross Pass (Jvari Pass, 2,395 metres, the highest point on the route) and descends 30 kilometres to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), the gateway to Mount Kazbek and Gergeti Trinity Church. The descent is steep with many switchbacks - drive in low gear and watch for oncoming trucks. In summer, the Truso Valley (turnoff 5 kilometres north of Gudauri) offers a dirt-road detour east towards abandoned Soviet-era buildings and mineral springs; this track requires a 4x4 and takes two to three hours return. Beyond Kazbegi, the highway continues to the Georgian-Russian border at Dariali (closed to tourists; do not approach), so turn around at Stepantsminda unless you have specific permits.
Gudauri's ski season runs from mid-December to late March, with peak snow in January and February. During this period, the Georgian Military Highway is ploughed daily by the Roads Department, but overnight snow can close the road temporarily until crews clear it - usually by 10 AM. Check conditions before you drive; the Roads Department hotline (dial 2 42 22 22 from a Georgian number) and hotel reception desks provide updates. If you encounter a closure, do not attempt to drive through; wait until the plough convoy passes, then follow it up the mountain.
In winter, we recommend booking an SUV or 4x4 with winter tyres (included in all our mountain-season rentals). The Dacia Duster and Toyota RAV4 handle packed snow well, and both have traction control systems. If you are not experienced with mountain driving, consider adding an additional driver who has driven in snow - the surcharge is only 20 GEL per day, and it allows you to share the route back to Tbilisi if you are tired after a day on the slopes. Snow chains are rarely required on the main E117 (the highway is salted and gritted), but if you plan to explore side roads or the Truso Valley in winter, ask for chains at pickup. Most hire companies in Georgia do not provide them; 4Drive can supply a set for 50 GEL per rental if requested 48 hours in advance.
Parking at the ski lifts in Gudauri is limited. The main gondola base station (New Gudauri) has a paid car park (5 GEL per day), but it fills by 9 AM on weekends. If you stay at a hotel in the resort, most offer free parking for guests. Ski equipment (skis, snowboards, boots) can be carried in the boot of a Toyota Corolla or Skoda Octavia, but an SUV is more practical if you have four people plus luggage - the RAV4 boot holds four sets of skis plus cases comfortably. If you cannot get through, drive or walk to a hotel or restaurant and ask to use their landline. We will arrange a replacement vehicle or roadside repair; if the problem is mechanical failure (not driver error), there is no charge. If you need a tow from a remote track (for example, if you get stuck in snow off the main road), towing fees apply - discuss them with the recovery crew before they hook up, as prices vary.
Gudauri has one petrol station (Lukoil) on the main road through the resort, open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM. Prices are approximately 10-15 per cent higher than in Tbilisi due to transport costs. Unleaded 95 is widely available; diesel is also sold but queues can be long in winter when trucks refuel. The nearest alternative station is in Pasanauri (30 kilometres south) or Stepantsminda (30 kilometres north). Fill your tank in Tbilisi or Mtskheta before climbing to Gudauri - it is cheaper and you avoid waiting. A full tank in a Toyota Corolla (50 litres) covers the return trip Tbilisi-Gudauri-Tbilisi with a margin, plus local driving around the resort.
Electric vehicle charging is not available in Gudauri. The nearest EV charger is at Ananuri (a slow 22 kW AC point at the fortress car park, often occupied), and the next is in Mtskheta. If you plan to drive an electric car from Tbilisi, you must have a range of at least 250 kilometres to reach Gudauri and return safely. In winter, cold temperatures reduce battery capacity by 20-30 per cent, making EVs impractical for the mountain route.
